Read Aloud Treasury

Thank you for your positive comments about our blog!  It has been energizing to read your comments, or have a parent stop us and tell us how much they are enjoying the posts.  The purpose of this series has been to spark interest in our community for reading aloud outside of the school setting.   Thanks for your support!

This final post will be the most practical one. Jim Trelease provides a “Treasury of Read Alouds” at the end of his book. We believe that we could create a Treasury of Read Alouds from the books used in our own community.

Here are some of the books that have worked well in my family.

My Father’s Dragon Trilogy (at ages 4, 6 and 8- This was my favorite family read aloud.)

A Dog’s Life, my current read aloud (at ages 6, 8 and 10)

Roscoe Riley (son at age 6)

Clemetine (daughters at ages 7, 9)

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight (son from 2 and up)

Eat Your Peas Ivy Louise (at ages 2, 4, and 6- When I pulled this to let Jessica borrow, my daughter needed to know it was coming back!)

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (My son still loves this book and although he can read it, he wants to hear us read it to him.)

The Unofficial Guide to Disney (My first venture with nonfiction before our first trip to Disney at ages 5, 7 and 9...of course, I only read parts. Recently, my daughter found a kids’ version at the library and is loving reading it on her own.)

James and The Giant Peach (daughters at age 5, 7)

Mr. Popper’s Penguins (at ages 4, 6 and 8, followed by watching the movie)

Shel Silverstein Poems (I grew up on these and not enough children know them!)

On deck...ShoeShine Girl for my 8 year old daugher (my favorite chapter book when I was little), Out of My Mind for my 10 year old daughter, Shredderman for my 6 year old son

                

As our discussion of read aloud deepens and spreads, finding the time to read aloud seems to be a common theme.  If starting a longer text is still daunting or if you just want a place to start, here is a list of picture book authors that we love.
